Thoughts

Like many others I first met Dave at cricket, his first game for Great Chart in fact. His uncle Geoff, a stalwart and popular member at Great Chart brought him along as we were struggling to field a team. If my memory serves me correctly his first match was at Sellindge in the summer of '76'. Dave hit a fluent 20 odd and was the only highlight in a crushing defeat. He was clearly a natural and we all encouraged him to come and join the club. Our luck continued as soon after his Dad joined us to become our regular scorer. I'm sure these were rewarding times for Dave and certainly for us. In his many years at Great Chart his stats were simply remarkable with both bat and ball but it was not only his efforts on the field which benefitted the club. His time and dedication off the field assisting with the progression of the club into what it is today was invaluable. I joined Dave at the crease on many occasions, the easy task at the non-strikers end, as he dispatched the opposition's bowlers to all parts of the ground. It was just a case of watch, enjoy and admire. We all knew if Dave was in full flow a victory was more probable. Thank you Dave for all those treasured memories. ( not just cricket but football too). A true gentleman and a friend to many. You will be greatly missed. My deepest condolences to all the family.

I first met David in 1986 when I joined GCCC. As said in my donation note, he was a true inspiration to me, although our comparative cricketing prowess only included us both being left hand batters! I played under his captaincy for so many years; his contribution to GCCC both on and off the field was immense. Stats don't lie. I once enjoyed a 156 opening run partnership with him and actually outscored him but only slightly. Probably the one and only time. A truly humble; gentle and kind man, taken far too soon. Sending once again my condolences to Lisa; Harry and the rest of the family, and I will be there on the 16th to pay my respects.

I first met David at the Kent County ground at Canterbury in 2000 where GCCC used their facilities for net practice following my interest in joining the club. David was Club Captain at the time and he initially struck me as a genial man. He immediately made me feel welcome at the club. As I got to know David better, I learnt and respected his cricketing prowess and dedication to Great Chart Cricket Club. His batting and bowling statistics, I suspect, will never be beaten. Lin and I were privileged to have been invited to David and Lisa’s wedding and it was also a privilege to have known him. It is with the greatest regret and sadness that I will be unable to attend David’s funeral as I’ll be out of the country, however, we will take a moment and think of him on the 16th June. Our deepest sympathies go to Lisa, Harry and David’s extended family. Taken too soon. RIP David
